Malleshwaram, Malleswaram or Malleshwara is a north-western district of Bengaluru city. It was developed as a planned suburb after the great plague of 1898, which caused many people to move out of the city center. It derives its name from the Kaadu Malleshwara temple.
H. V. Nanjundaiah is credited with the founding of Malleshwaram, and 6th main road is named after him. The neighborhood of Malleshwaram hosts people from all walks of life. The Nobel laureate (C.V. Raman), renowned scientist (Krishnaswamy Kasturirangan) and badminton world champion (Prakash Padukone) lived here. So did many writers, scholars, musicians (Doraiswamy Iyengar),renowned Kannada writer/poet Sri.G.P.Rajarathnam, children (Gowrishankar), film stars (SarojaDevi), and educators (M.P.L.Shastry).
On the cross-roads, 8th cross road is a popular shopping street - with everything from clothes to fruits, vegetables and flowers available. The road is always buzzing with people. During festivals, the road between Sampige and Margosa is closed to traffic and resembles a market with items pertaining to each festival put up on sale. Another prominent landmark in Malleshwaram is the Indian Institute of Science.The World Trade Center (WTC) is near Malleshwaram.
The world famous dosa restaurant, CTR or Central Tiffin Rooms, which is now known as Shree Sagar is located at 7th Cross and Margosa Road in Malleshwaram as is the famous idli shop, Veena stores, located on 15th Cross and Margosa Road.
